The Open forms part of one of the big four Majors of the year and is the only event that is held outside the United States.
This is a massive event, with hundreds of people working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the tournament happens without a hitch. Here I look at some rather extraordinary numbers that tell an untold story.
Did you know that:
- 200 litter pickers will be keeping the course and surrounds immaculate.
- 1 500 catering staff will be serving 86 000 pints of beer, 11 000 bars of chocolate, 33 000 portions of chips, 40 000 cups of tea/coffee and 20 000 sandwiches.
- Over 400 journalists will be in attendance.
- Over 100 photographers will be snapping away.
- 100 scorers, 1 100 marshalls and 300 carriers will ensure that all the scores are accurate and that the rules of golf abided by. The marshalls will also keep the crowds quiet as players hit their shots.
- The event will bring an estimated £90 000 000 to the region.
- 1 300 television personnel will be creating 3 676 hours worth of coverage that will be viewed by around 458 million people in 196 countries.
